Can I record from DVR to computer thru USB instead of installing tv tuner card in computer?
Looking at USB tv tuners on ebay is confusing. Many look like they just accept signal from the air. I need a suggestion for model that will allow me to directly connect DVR to computer, hopefully one that’s not too expensive. Thanks!!!
They accept a radio frequency signal – most DVRs have a channel 3 or channel 4 output – which tuners will handle.
If the DVR has USB video output (and a driver for the computer – there would have to b e one for the version of operating system you’re running) you could use USB – but I doubt that any DVRs have USB video output.
I did a thorough study of available tuners a few months ago, before I bought one. I settled on the Hauppauge 950-Q. I’ve been using it for months now and, with Windows 7 WMC, it works great. (Earlier versions of WMC didn’t handle HDTV.) The software that comes with the 950-Q isn’t great (you may have harsher words for it), but if you’re only using it on 1 channel (channel 3 or 4), that wouldn’t matter. And if you wanted to use it on cable or an antenna, WMC will make it a nice experience.

I want my customer to sign the agreement before I perform my work on his computer. This will explain the limitation and risk of the service and granting me full permission to work on his PC and perform any tasks I want.
I used to manage a local precinct of a national computer repair chain (yeah, that one) so here are a few tips… I would highly reccomend you take one of your old PC’s in for a cleaning ($39) just so you can get a solid example of what an agreement looks like. Here are the BIGGIES…
1. Make a clause that you are not responsible for any data loss that may occur during the repair. Even if nothing is wrong with the hard drive when the computer is brought in, you are not responsible. Charge for data back-ups.
2. Repair times are estimates only and are subject to change without notice. No turnaround times less than 48 hours unless you honestly believe you can do it.
3. Computers will be scanned for viruses and spyware before any work is performed — No software issues will be repaired until the computer is clear of all viruses and spyware.
4. It is the customer’s responsibility to inspect their computer upon pickup. Any issues with the repair must be reported within 24 hours otherwise the customer is subject to additional charges.
5. You reserve the right to suspend work on anything if you have reason to believe that the customer is in posession of stolen software or illegal data.
